NEXT - Real Stories About Energy and the Environment

“I'm an idealist: I don't know where I'm going but I'm on my way”

Carl Sandburg

Welcome to the first Blog posting of NEXT - Real Stories About Energy and the Environment.

I have been in the energy industry for thirty years. I am a Systems Design engineer with an engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. I have been recognized by all levels of government and media across the country as Canada’s foremost expert in energy production, conservation, and climate change. My company, 4EL Energy, develops new energy technologies (production and conservation).

I was nominated by the United Nations for the Katerva Award – the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for my work in sustainability. My current focus is bringing the Stingray Wind Power system that will provide clean water, clean energy and save lives globally.

For many years I have been asked to write about the real issues associated with energy, climate change, the environment and the challenges associated with achieving emissions reduction and energy efficiency goals.

It was mid-afternoon on a beautiful sunny day this past summer when a gentleman asked me about my company – what we do and how we do it. I told him that we spend our days developing and manufacturing the next generation of energy-conserving and energy producing technologies.

He smiled, nodded, and then told me that he was considering installing solar panels on his roof. Hearing this, I gave him a copy of the first edition of this book and asked him to read the brief chapter on solar energy. About ten minutes later he finished, and I asked him if he still wanted to put solar on his roof. He smiled and replied with an emphatic no.

That same week, a friend of mine was travelling from the US through Southern Ontario and commented that, of the fifteen wind turbines that he saw installed near the Canadian border, only one was turning.

What we consider alternative energy technologies are legacy ideas that require burdensome financial incentives to make them appear worthwhile. However, there is a new generation of more effective solutions that are providing the results we have always wanted.

There is a simple truth in my business that few people know, and few understand. What most people consider waste energy is one of the most lucrative investment opportunities that companies and countries can take advantage of.

It is simply energy mistakenly titled and more correctly termed an advantageously incisive and profitable asset. Yet this available resource accounts for nearly fifty percent of the energy consumed and fifty percent of the greenhouse gas emissions that are generated.

When did energy efficiency become a definition for what is correctly described as, energy optimization.

It is my hope that the stories presented in this blog and associate newsletter will provide insight into the real difficulties that impede the world’s progress.

It is not taught or understood and until it is, nothing will change.

At the time of writing it has been determined that

over 45 trillion dollars has been spent globally on green energy

without any financial benefit and no environmental improvement.

That is the state of our policies, our leaders, a statement of the competence of the financial community and billions of people who do not see it clearly.

The fact is that everything we are striving for is easy to accomplish. The problem is that the world doesn’t understand.
